When can we visit SGS?
We offer tours of the school which allow you to visit classrooms and ask questions in an intimate setting, as well as Open Houses, at which you can hear a formal presentation from the Head of School, Admissions Director, and current families as your daughter participates in a hands-on, SGS-style group project with current students and faculty.

Admissions tours are held each Thursday morning from October through February (except school closures/holidays).  For more details, please call 206-709-2228. RSVP required for all tours.

Open Houses will be held from 3:00-5:00pm on Sunday, November 4, 2007 and Saturday, December 8, 2007 at SGS, 2706 S. Jackson St.

When are applications due?
To be considered "on-time", complete applications for the 2007-2008 school year are due to SGS by January 17, 2008.  Applications received afterwards will be considered on a space-available basis.  Other important dates include:

November 4, 2007 Open House, 3-5pm at Seattle Girls' School
December 8, 2007 Open House, 3-5pm at Seattle Girls' School
January 17, 2008 Admissions Application Due
February 8, 2008 Financial Aid Application Due
March 20, 2008 Admissions Decisions mailed with Financial Aid Awards
April 2, 2008 Contracts and Deposits Due

How many applications do you receive each year and how many applicants do you accept?
Because we are still a new school, we cannot accurately forecast the number of applications we will receive each year.  Similarly, we do not have a formula for the number or percentage of applicants we will accept, deny, or waitlist.  Each figure is determined each year, depending on the total number of applications received and the number of places available.

Currently, our major "points of entry" into the school are 5th and 6th grades.  Places beyond 6th grade are available when vacancies by current students occur.  We may consider mid-year applications if space is available.

What makes a successful applicant to SGS?
While we ask that applicants to SGS must be performing at or above grade level, as determined by the prospective student's current school, without moderate to severe learning differences, we pride ourselves on the fact that there is no "cookie cutter" SGS student.  Each year, we seek to build classes of students that represent a richness of interests, personalities, learning styles, perspectives, and educational and cultural experiences.

We view the application process as a matching one between school, student, and family.  SGS provides families with opportunities to learn about the school at Open Houses, weekly tours, in our admissions information materials, and on our Web site.  We view the application for admission as the family and students opportunity to tell us about them.  As a result, we encourage applicants to be themselves - both on paper and in person.

We consider the best "matches" for SGS those students - and families - who can best contribute to and benefit from the school's unique mission, curriculum, setting, and approach to learning.

I've sent in my pieces of the application and given the rest of the forms to the appropriate people at my daughter's current school.  How will I know if you have received everything?
In early January, we will send "status postcards" to let you know which - if any - pieces of the application are missing.  You are also welcome to call 206-709-2228 or email the admissions office admissions@seattlegirlsschool.org at any time to check the status of your application.

Is there anything else we need to do after submitting our application and/or financial aid paperwork?
Once we receive your daughter's completed application, we will contact you to schedule an interview so that we have an opportunity to get to know you and your daughter better.

How do you make admissions decisions?
Once all applicants have been interviewed, the Admissions Committee meets, and each member makes recommendations to admit, wait-list, or deny each applicant.  Decisions are made by consensus.  Where appropriate, testing may be used as a tool to provide information to assist in the assessment of each candidate.  In all cases, the school retains the right to determine, in its sole discretion, whether or not to select a student for admission.  Final approval rests with the Head of School.

Is preference given to siblings or other "connected" candidates?
Siblings, children or other immediate relatives and friends of current or former SGS students, as well as those of current, former, or prospective SGS employees, Board of Trustees and Advisory Board members, guest instructors or lecturers, community partners, volunteers, donors, and other SGS community members must apply for admission and financial aid through the same application process as all prospective families.

Can you support a student with learning differences?
Unfortunately, at this time, because we do not have a learning specialist, we are unable to support moderate to severe learning differences.

How do families of admitted students get involved in SGS?
We are enriched by our families' involvement and encourage, welcome, and support as much involvement as families would like to have with SGS.  We recognize that families have many commitments, so we do not require a certain number of volunteer hours.  That said, families are required to be members of their daughter's Learning Team and are automatically members of the Community Association of Parents (CAP):

Family involvement is welcomed and encouraged.  Family members teach internships, drive to and from events, volunteer in the administrative area, work on the school's technology, etc. - we could not be the school we are without our families!  At the same time, we recognize that families will have differing levels of involvement based on their other commitments and welcome whatever level of involvement that best suits each family.
