Gummi
Bear Skyscraper Challenge
You may not be aware that Gummi Bears are
the most business savvy candies in the confectionary world. They are in desperate need of a new
skyscraper to replace the last one damaged in one of the disastrous windstorms
known to haunt Gummi Valley. You and your architectural team have been asked to
propose a design for a skyscraper that meets the Gummišs requirements.
Your job: Build a model skyscraper and submit it to
a wind test. In the presentation
of your building, before the wind tests, each team member must speak about the
features of your new design and discuss possible improvements.
You
will be provided with the following supplies:
- One roll of
scotch tape
- A deck of
playing cards
- 10 drinking
straws
- Gummi Bears
- Ruler
- A pair of
scissors may be purchased for team use at the cost of 2 straws or 10
cards.
Your
skyscraper must meet the following requirements:
- Be a
minimum height of 14 inches
- Support the
weight of 10 Gummi Bears on its top floor or roof which is at least 14
inches above ground
- Be
freestanding and portable
- Be able to
withstand a windstorm generated by a hair dryer at a distance of 14 inches
away (Students may determine
the direction from which the wind will blow.)
- Use only
the provided materials
- Be completed
in the time allotted
