Proficiency Checklist: Basic Filming
FILM REQUIREMENTS
Student films a BRIEF movie
(maximum of 2 minutes, no editing, single take), which demonstrates the
following key stills:
- The shot is kept level on the horizontal.
- The shot is kept level on the vertical.
- There is an example of smooth horizontal panning.
- There is an example of smooth vertical panning.
- Zooming effectively focuses attention, but is not
excessive.
Each individual
must film a scene herself.
The scene can be
original or a known story such as a nursery rhyme.
It is okay if
the scene topic is the same as another class member.
You may film a
scene with more than one actor, if you chose.
Dialogue is
permissible, but swearing is not.

REFLECTION
Consider the
film short you created.
- Explain why you chose to pan when you did.
What purpose did it serve? What were you attempting to communicate to the
audience?
- Explain why you chose to zoom when you
did. What were you trying to communicate by zooming?
- Explain which of the 5 basic shots you
utilized. What did you intend each specific shot communicate?
