STILLS
Rule of Thirds
- Creates/locates a stable, comfortable image utilizing
the Rule of Thirds
- Creates/locates an image that purposely violates the
Rule of Thirds in order to draw attention to an item/character.
- Pays close attention to "head room" of
characters
5 Basic Shot Types
- Creates/locates an image which demonstrates knowledge
of ELS
- Creates/locates an image which demonstrates knowledge
of LS
- Creates/locates an image which demonstrates knowledge
of MS
- Creates/locates an image which demonstrates knowledge
of CU
- Creates/locates an image which demonstrates knowledge
of ECU
SLIDESHOW/SHOT LIST
Student creates a PowerPoint slide
show (minimum 4 slides, maximum 8 slides) of a simple story line (such as a
nursery rhyme), which includes the following key stills:
- Appropriate use of ELS/LS for establishing scene or
situation
- Appropriate use of CU to highlight thoughts or
emotions
- Appropriate framing of MS paying close attention to
head room and focusing on the character or action, not dead space
- Application of Rule of Thirds, where appropriate
WRITTEN
REFLECTION
- Spend a night in front of the TV. Just kidding! But do watch a television show or
keep an eye out for particularly good examples of commercials that employ
or violate the Rule of Thirds and a use a variety of basic shots. Describe the composition of at
least 3 shots and describe why you think the filmers chose them.
