Brenda Bauer, Chair

Brenda Bauer is part of Mayor Greg Nickels' cabinet for the City of Seattle as the Director of the city's Fleets and Facilities Department. She oversees a department of about 300 staff and a $78 million dollar operating budget.

Ms. Bauer is responsible for the construction of the city's Fire Levy program, passed in 2003, to upgrade, renovate, or replace 32 neighborhood fire stations and other key training and emergency facilities. In addition to the Fire Levy projects, the Fleets and Facilities Department also purchases and maintains about 4,000 vehicles, including everything from Segways to fire boats. The department manages approximately 100 general purpose City facilities, as well as the City's non-utility real estate portfolio.

Ms. Bauer is an attorney, a graduate of the Seattle University School of Law/UPS. She also has an undergraduate degree in social work from the University of Missouri - Columbia. She has previously served on non-profit community boards and currently chairs the Board of Trustees for the Seattle Girls' School.

Kristin Merlo, Vice Chair

Kristin Merlo is Vice President of Sales and Marketing and Chief Marketing Officer for Washington Dental Service. Her responsibilities include sales, account management, the corporate web site, corporate advertising and communications, market research, product development, compliance and government relations.

Prior to joining Washington Dental Service, Ms. Merlo held a variety of sales and marketing management positions with Eli Lilly and Company, a major pharmaceutical firm. While there, she managed the first consumer advertisement program for the blockbuster antidepressant medicine, Prozac ®.

Ms. Merlo recently completed a certificate in Executive Leadership from Seattle University. She earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Virginia.

Ms. Merlo enjoys her personal time with her husband, John Merlo, and their two young children.

Todd Curtis, Secretary

Todd Curtis, PhD has conducted research in several areas of aviation risk assessment and accident prevention. He is the author of the books Understanding Aviation Safety Data and Parenting and the Internet, as well as a number of articles on airline safety. He is a licensed private pilot.

Carla Corkern

Carla Corkern is a mom, a girl scout leader, and a passionate advocate for Girl Empowerment!

Her profession career spans 16 years of work in Science and Technology. Carla is currently CEO for Talyst, Inc. of Bellevue, Washington, the leading provider of pharmacy automation software. She most recently served as COO at Vykor, Inc. Prior to that, she served as a key executive for Netegrity of Waltham, Massachusetts and DataChannel, Inc. of Bellevue. Carla founded and ran her own successful Systems Integration company in Dallas, Texas before moving to the Pacific Northwest.

Carla holds a B.S. in technical communication from Louisiana Tech University and did graduate work at Southern Methodist University.

Deborah Reber

Deborah has authored and co-authored a number of books for teens, including the forthcoming Chill: Stress-Reducing Techniques for a More Balanced, Peaceful You (Simon Pulse, 2008), In Their Shoes: Extraordinary Women Describe Their Amazing Careers (Simon Pulse, 2007), the teen self-help series Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul's, The Real Deal (HCI/Scholastic, 2005-2006), and It's My Life's Friendship Handbook> (PBS's It's My Life, 2006). She is also the author of Run for Your Life: A Book for Beginning Women Runners (Perigee Books, 2002), as well as numerous children's books based on the hit television show Blue's Clues. She is the co-editor and co-publisher of Bold Ink: Collected Voices of Women and Girls (WriteGirl Publications, 2003). In addition to authoring books, Deborah hosts the website Smart Girls Know (www.smartgirlsknow.com) which shares information to empower and inspire girls of all ages.

A former children's television executive, Deborah has led workshops for girls at national conferences on things like making smart choices, finding your voice and speaking your truth, and setting goals to reach future dreams. She was a founding staff member of WriteGirl, a one-on-one mentoring program for teen g irls in Los Angeles and currently coaches young girls to run their first 5K thro ugh the nonprofit organization, Girls on The Run. Deborah received her B.A. in Communications from the Pennsylvania State University, and an M.A. in Media Studies from the New School for Social Research.

Gale Picker

Gale Picker is founder and board member of the Family Leadership Fund, an organization that has given over $1 million in the last decade to improve the lives of children and families in communities of color in the Seattle Region. She is also a certified counselor, primarily leading classes for children and families that offer parents/guardians/interested adults tools to give their children an emotional head start.

She worked in Washington DC for many years writing legislation on the staff of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee as well as the U.S. Senate Budget Committee. She was the first director at C-SPAN and her political programs (both the ones she produced and the ones she hosted on air) received awards from the cable television industry.

She graduated with a degree in economics from Bryn Mawr College, a women's institution that gave her the lifelong appreciation for the value of a single sex education. She is the proud mother of 2 daughters and a stepdaughter. Her daughter, Jeany, was SGS class of '06 and her stepdaughter, Fleur, is the program coordinator at SGS.

Jean Carter

Jean is a life-long resident of Washington State and currently lives on Mercer Island with her husband and teenage daughter. Jean spent 23 years at Russell Investment Group retiring in 2005 as a managing director. She was a member of Russell's corporate operating committee, and of the investment management groups fund strategy committee. Much of Jeans career focused on international investment management and she spent almost 3 years working in Russell's London office. Jean serves on the board of several non-profit organizations in the Seattle area.

Jean has a B.A. from Western Washington University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Washington.

Liz Marzolf

Liz Marzolf, PhD, is an organizational development professional currently working for Starbucks Coffee Company where she leads the change management effort for a global program.

Prior to joining Starbucks, Dr. Marzolf spent five years working for the Small Schools Coaches Collaborative coaching public high schools that received grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through their school reform work. She also worked as a change management/organizational development consultant with Andersen Consulting (now called Accenture) working for clients both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Marzolf received her Ph.D. in educational leadership & policy studies and M.Ed. in educational psychology from the University of Washington and her B.A.from Mount Holyoke College.

Dr. Marzolf spends her free time in the outdoors, pursuing activities such as cycling, mountain biking, teleskiing, and backpacking. She has previously served on non-profit boards focused on serving youth.

Moss Patashnik

Moss is a Seattle native, who has made educational stops at the University of California (Berekely B.A.), Northeastern University (J.D.) and the University of Washington (working on an LLM degree in Asian and Chinese Law). After stints as an attorney in appellate law (staff attorney for the Rhode Island Supreme Court) and a private law firm in Providence, Rhode Island, Moss took a year off and traveled around the world. If you ask him to name the most interesting country that he's ever visited, he'll say "India, hands down."

Moss returned to Seattle, met the love of his life (Peg Hall) and became a stay at home dad for Moriah (a graduate of Seattle Girls' School, now a 10th grader at Northwest School). He is presently Vice President of the Seattle Jewish Community School. He serves on several non-profit boards of directors and tries to find time to indulge his passions -- cycling, mountain climbing, classical piano and collecting first editions of 18th century British novels -- when he's not schlepping his equestrian daughter to the barn.

Peter M. Morton

Mr. Morton was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in Costa Rica, and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he graduated with a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering in 1958. He joined Boeing in 1958 and had assignments in customer flight crew training, flight operations engineering, marketing management for the 737 and 747, 757 flight deck design, program management, sales operations, cost management for the 7J7 Program, director of customer training for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, vice president of the Boeing Leadership Center. He retired from Boeing in 2000 as Vice President People for Boeing Commercial.

Mr. Morton consults on aviation flight deck and human factors design, leadership development, and training. He is Director Special Projects for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University where he concentrates on developments in future pedagogy and facilitating the development of curricula aligned with brain neuroscience. Mr. Morton serves on the Council for Aviation Accreditation, is a member of the board of trustees for the Seattle Museum of Flight. He is a past Board member of the National Academy for Nuclear Accreditation. He is married to Marie, and has three children, Doug 36, Jennifer 35, and Stephanie 32. He is active in support of the performing arts, and enjoys flying (is part owner of a Cirrus SR20), playing the piano, and reading.

Robin Moore

Robin Moore is a senior business leader in high-tech with prior roles at Microsoft, ICOS, Boeing Computer Services and in consulting. In her current position as Senior Director, Partner Relations for MediaNet Digital, Robin has end-to-end responsibility for strategic partnerships. At Microsoft, Robin was a member of the Americas Leadership Team for Worldwide Operations and led an organization responsible for managing strategic alliance partners and delivering all aspects of Partner and Channel Programs. At ICOS, Robin was a member of the Clinical Affairs Leadership Team and was responsible for starting up and leading its Business and Contracts organization. At Boeing Computer Services she led multi-national projects which included partners in France, Russia, Japan and the US in support of strategic joint development, integration and business reengineering efforts.

Robin's career has centered around strategic alliances in the form of partnerships, outsourcing, M & A and joint technology projects. Her areas of responsibility have included contract development/negotiation, international business, intellectual property, finance (budgets of $100M+), supply chain, vendor management and program/project management. Robin is a Seattle native, holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Washington, an MBA in International Business from Seattle University and has extensive leadership training including Kelloggs Executive Scholar program. She has been a leader for numerous corporate giving and diversity initiatives and is actively involved with organizations focused on anti-bias, children, the arts and the outdoors.

Sandy Secchia Aslanian

Sandy Secchia Aslanian has been working in the field of education since graduating from college in 1991. She taught high school social studies for 7 years, developed an online Advanced Placement course with a local technology company, and most recently was an administrator of the non-profit CCS Youth Tutoring Program, whose mission is to tutor, guide and inspire at-risk youth living in Seattle's low-income public housing communities to succeed in school.

Ms. Aslanian received a Master's in Education from Stanford University and a B.A. in U.S. History from the University of Notre Dame; she is currently certified to teach social studies to grades 7-12 in Washington state. Girls (especially middle and high school) education has always been a passion of hers. She enjoys spending time with her husband Joel and their three daughters (ages 1, 4, and 6).

Sara Levin

Sara Levin directs communications and intergovernmental relations for the City of Seattle Human Services Department. The Human Services Department funds and operates programs for low-income and vulnerable people in Seattle. Prior to this position, Sara worked in the Seattle Department of Finance as a policy and budget analyst and as assistant director for community development and human services. Sara's other professional experience includes being a case manager for Russian-speaking refugees and an information and assistance advocate for senior citizens. She has an MPA from the Evans School of Public Affairs and a BA in Russian language and literature from Reed College. She has been chair of the Crisis Clinic and Street Youth Legal Advocates of WA boards, and is thrilled to be part of the amazing SGS community.

Sarah Boden

Sarah G. Boden was most recently Chief Operating Officer at Print. Inc. Ms. Boden brings more than twenty years of leadership experience and achievement in senior management roles with leading financial and business services firms including Bowne Global Solutions, The Thomson Corporation, Citibank, Shearson Lehman Hutton, Inc. and Deloitte and Touche LLP.

Prior to her position at Print, Inc., Ms. Boden served as Chief Operating Officer of Bowne Global Solutions, a division of Bowne Inc. Before that, she served in various senior management roles culminating as Senior Vice President, Operations, of Thomson Financial, a division of The Thomson Corporation, an $8B global integrated information solutions provider to business and professional customers in over 130 countries worldwide.

Sharon L. Hammel

Sharon Hammel is Director in the Portfolio Strategies Group at Russell Investment Group. Sharon is responsible for ensuring policies, knowledge and insights of the group are implemented in institutional and individual client portfolios. She serves as key contact for product lines and business units evaluating product issues. Prior to her current role she was Director for Portfolio Implementation. Sharon joined Russell in 1988, and has been involved in product development, legal and regulatory issues with investment managers around the globe over the last 10 years.

She received her BA in Psychology from Colorado College, Colorado Springs in 1975 and her Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1987. Prior to joining Russell she was with a regional strategic planning and management consulting firm in Denver.

Sharon is one of three founders of Seattle Girls' School and has served on the Board of Trustees since 1999. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband, Harvey Rubinstein, also a founder, their daughter who graduated in 2005, and her son who is currently in middle school.
