November 14, 2006 Seattle Girls' School Builds Endowment to Help Provide Need-Based Scholarships for One-Third of Students Seattle, WA -- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $1 million Challenge Grant to the Seattle Girls' School (SGS), which will help provide scholarship funds for over thirty percent of students that receive annual, need-based financial aid. The Foundation has agreed to match funds raised by SGS, up to a total amount of $1 million, by the deadline of November 1, 2007. The grant, which is the second of two $1 million matching grants, was given to help support SGS scholarship endowment fund. "Seattle Girls' School serves as an important gateway to opportunity for young women in our community, and we are honored that the Gates Foundation continues to support our efforts to provide the best education and tools for girls developing skills in math, science, and technology," said Head of School, Marja Brandon. Now in its sixth year, Seattle Girls' School offers girls of all backgrounds a well-rounded curriculum that integrates math, science, and technology into all subjects, as well as a learning environment that emphasizes critical thinking and real world problem solving. The hands-on curriculum was designed to draw out students' interests and strengths. "This school is different than anything that has come before. These girls know how to ask why, how to work together across differences to solve problems, how to put their ideas into action. There is no better contribution we can make to the future than to provide these kind of skills for girls who can and will become our next community leaders," emphasizes Board of Trustees Chair Brenda Bauer. Seattle Girls' School Founded in 2000, Seattle Girls' School empowers middle school girls to think critically and seek creative solutions to real world problems in a challenging academic environment that highlights math, science, and technology, embraces diversity and promotes collaboration, integrated learning and respect for all. Seattle Girls' School is a member of the National Coalition of Girls' Schools and holds a Candidate membership in the Pacific Association of Independent Schools. |
