The shared learning spaces are the heart of our new design. The way that teaching and learning happens at SGS is that teachers may do a lesson with students all together, but then students may break up into small or large groups. At our current site, this means that students are meeting in the hallways, breezeways and wherever they can - people are stepping over one another, etc. At the new site, the classrooms open to shared learning spaces, which have a variety of seating options and tables that have white boards. There is also a teaching wall in the shared learning space so that a full grade could meet together there. On the first floor, the shared learning space also opens directly to the courtyard.
We deliberately selected stools/seating for the shared learning space that are indoor/outdoor so that students can take them with them outdoors as well - the whole campus is part of the classroom. And because so much of the campus is glass, a teacher in a first floor classroom could be in their classroom but still have eyes on the students inside and outside.
