SGS October 2021 Round Up

October was a great month for the SGS community as we got back into the swing of things and had many opportunities to connect with one another, learn, grow, and create! From our Fall Festival and 20th Anniversary Kick-off to our equity and inclusion virtual speakers, we have embraced the spirit of learning and community in many different ways.
7th grader Raphaela B. said, "I think the highlight of the week was learning about the events leading up to the revolution in Wendy's social studies class. We got to draw comics about the events and be creative with how we interpreted it, and it was really fun to come up with my own ideas."

Classroom highlights
This month, 5th graders started preparing for Comic-Con Culmination by investigating relationships and turning our various vulnerabilities into our super strengths. Students will combine their ideas and values to create a Super Hero, Super Shero, or Super person that embodies those traits!

Meanwhile, 6th graders practiced group roles with a challenge: to build the tallest and sturdiest tower with dried pasta and marshmallows! Students also reflected on their role and how they were supporting the rest of the team. Way to go, 6th graders!

7th and 8th graders have also been working on their teamwork skills in Adventure + Wellness! A+W gives students to support themselves and each other while engaging in fun physical activities such as Mushroom Tag and Darth Vader Dodgeball.
Students have been busy exploring their creative sides, too. 7th graders have started a printmaking exploration unit and 8th graders have been getting ready for their independent study art piece by looking for art and artists that inspire them. They will begin to hone in on what is important to them as artists with their first big project of the year: The Point of Departure Project. We can’t wait to see what everyone creates!

Math night
The SGS Math Department hosted a math night to share their experience and approach to teaching math. Check out the recording

20 Years, 20 Stories series
All throughout SGS’ 20th school year, we will be sharing conversations with voices from throughout the community. We have already shared the stories of 2006 alum, Keira Edwards and 2014 alum Mackenzie Palmer! If you haven’t already, be sure to check those out and stay tuned for more stories to come!

Student voices throughout the month
"I liked learning about affinity and alliance groups at the Affinity Fair" - Madrona Z. 5th grade
"I loved how we got to read together in small groups during Humanities so we could get to know each other better and have fun. " - Solveig Y., 5th grade

"This week was super fun! My highlight this week is the neurographic art assignment that we did. It was really fun because we got to write down a challenge we have and then draw on a piece of paper while thinking about the challenge and the drawings turned out looking really nice." - Sofia F., 6th grade

"My highlight is tech this week. It was extremely fun to use code.org to learn new ways to code! Marcel let me work at my own pace and I had a great time!" - Naomi H., 6th grade

"This week we had testing, which was pretty hard, but then afterwards I got to go to art and paint! It was so nice to just relax and make stuff. " - Wren B., 7th grade

"My highlight for the week is in Wednesday Workshops. My workshop is woodworking and I enjoyed getting to design a piece of furniture and then starting to cut wood. I also learned some things from doing that." - Cassandra A., 8th grade

We look forward to another great month of SGS in November!
