Comic Con Origins and Toy Study

by Ariel
As we start the New Year in 5th Grade, we are turning our attention to the Toy Study project and Comic Con Culmination! This project is something students work on in several of their different classes: Humanities, PMA, Tech, Music, and A&W. They will draw on the different skills they learn in each of those classes to prepare an amazing showcase for the Culmination scheduled on Wednesday, February 16th. Adults at home, please mark your calendars and plan to attend from 5:30-6:30pm that evening. More details will be sent out closer to the date.

For now, here is a sneak peak of what’s happening right now in the classroom to prepare for this Culmination. In Humanities, 5th Graders have stepped into the role of Anthropologists to study the world of toys. They have developed a shared definition of “culture” and worked to refine their understanding of being objective versus subjective. Last week, students answered the question: “Do toys impact culture?”. In the next few weeks, students will be examining bias and impacts in the way toys are designed and marketed. You can look forward to them sharing their research and opinions as part of the Culmination in February.

In PMA, students are working on developing a super person character informed by their own personal values. They delved deep into world building right before winter break and now they will begin to turn their attention to character development and costume design! Spoiler alert: students will be learning some skills in Tech to incorporate into their costumes as well as composing a superhero theme in Music!

We are looking forward to sharing all this hard work with you in February. In the meantime, consider how you might dress up to participate in the 2022 5th Grade Comic Con!
