ArtxCode

6th Graders have just completed their first term in Computer Science! They have coded incredible works of art using JavaScript coding language. JavaScript is a scripting language that enables you to create dynamically updated multimedia and animation on the Internet.  As the core programming language in 6th and 7th grade computer science curricula, students learn the basics through a series of lessons in a simulated environment of Code.org. 6th graders have become quite skilled with coding 2D scenes by manipulating geometric shapes and their properties (such as height, color and stroke) on an x/y coordinate grid. Not only are they able to make complex works of art using a variety of polygon shapes, they can also combine shapes to overlap and become new ones. For instance, overlapping two circles to create a crescent moon. Every year, I am amazed and impressed with the scenes students come up with! Check out a few of them here.
