SGS MENTOR PROGRAM

Welcome to the Seattle Girls’ School Mentor Program!

Do you remember your middle-school experience? Who was the most influential person in your life? Looking back, do you ever wish you had someone, outside of your family and friends, to talk to, to encourage you, or maybe to open your mind to possibilities you may not have considered? As the Mentor Coordinator at Seattle Girls’ School, I’d like to invite you to consider being this person for one of our students!

The goal of the Mentor Program is to make our students “strong from the inside out” by building a community around each student during the transformative time of middle school. We are looking for a diverse group of women or non-binary mentors to match with our incoming fifth and sixth graders. We welcome mentors from any race, religion, sexual orientation, and national or ethnic origin, as we aim to match students with adults who share these identities with them.

The unique experiences and insights that each student will gain by having a mentor will enhance her education at SGS and be a rewarding growth experience for each mentor as well.

Please see our application below to become a SGS mentor.

Thank you for supporting Seattle Girls’ School!

Commitment
Participating adults are expected to mentor a student during the 2018-2019 school year from October through June. However, these bonds are usually so fulfilling for both mentors and mentees that the relationship continues throughout the student’s time at SGS and even beyond.
Throughout the school year, there will be a monthly Mentor Program event planned and sponsored by Seattle Girls’ School. These usually happen on Saturdays or Sundays, but stay tuned for the 2018-2019 schedule. Additionally, we encourage mentors and mentees to meet on their own once a month. These meetings will be organized by you, your mentee, and your mentee’s family. Some examples of one on one meetings are:
  • Helping your mentee with homework
  • Bringing your mentee to work for a tour
  • Shared interests or hobbies
  • Going out for coffee, tea, or ice cream
  • Coming to SGS to have lunch with your mentee
Upcoming Mentor Events

Stay tuned for a list of our Mentor Program events in 2018-2019!

Mentor Application

Mentor Application

We ask mentors to make a once to twice-a-month commitment of in-person time with their mentee from November to June. SGS organizes and hosts activities for one of the meetings each month, with events ranging from rock climbing to gaming, to volunteering and beyond. There are many other ways to be involved in a mentee's life outside of our formal programming, like coming to the school for lunch, attending a class culmination or bringing your mentee to work. One of our previous mentees, who has gone on to become a leader on and off campus, was asked to describe her relationship with her mentor and simply said, “She just gets me. I can ask her anything and she will still like me for me.” The unique experiences and insights that each student will gain by having a mentor will enhance her education at Seattle Girls’ School and be a rewarding growth experience for each mentor as well. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Devon at dsimpson@seattlegirlsschool.org.
