SGS MENTOR PROGRAM

Welcome to the Seattle Girls’ School Mentor Program!

Do you remember your middle-school experience? Who was the most influential person in your life? Looking back, do you ever wish you had someone, outside of your family and friends, to talk to, to encourage you, or maybe to open your mind to possibilities you may not have considered? As the Mentor Coordinator at Seattle Girls’ School, I’d like to invite you to consider being this person for one of our students!

The goal of the Mentor Program is to make our students “strong from the inside out” by building a community around each student during the transformative time of middle school. We are looking for a diverse group of women or non-binary mentors to match with our incoming sixth graders. We welcome mentors from any race, religion, sexual orientation, and national or ethnic origin, as we aim to match students with adults who share these identities with them. The unique experiences and insights that each student will gain by having a mentor will enhance their education at SGS and be a rewarding growth experience for each mentor as well.

Below you will find our application for the 2021-2022 Mentor Program. If you’re interested in learning more or know someone who would make a great mentor, please email mentor@sgs-wa.org.

Thank you for supporting Seattle Girls’ School!

Commitment

Participating adults are expected to mentor a student during the 2021-2022 school year from October through June, and this year we are creating mentor pods that will consist of 3-4 students and 2 mentors. These bonds are usually so fulfilling for both mentors and mentees that the relationship continues throughout the student’s time at SGS and even beyond.

Throughout the school year, there will be a monthly Mentor Program event planned and sponsored by Seattle Girls’ School. This year will be a little different as SGS will host monthly virtual events and an in-person opening and closing event. These usually happen on Saturdays or Sundays, but stay tuned for the 2021-2022 schedule. Additionally, we encourage mentors and mentees to meet on their own once a month. These meetings will be organized by you, your mentee, and your mentee’s family.

Some examples of one on one meetings are:

Helping your mentee with homework

Bringing your mentee to work for a tour

Shared interests or hobbies

Going out for coffee, tea, or ice cream

Upcoming Mentor Events

This year will be a little different as SGS will host monthly virtual events and an in-person opening and closing event.

Please remember to connect with your mentor before each event so that you can attend it together. If either party is unable to attend, please plan on meeting together independently at a different time when both of you are available.
