Our Unique Strengths

by Sophie
This past week, the 5th graders examined their own unique strengths through a literary lens. First, they described the strengths of the protagonist of A Fish In A Tree, Ally Nickerson. Students practiced citing textual evidence as proof of what they believed to be true. Later, they assessed their own unique strengths, and continued practicing the use of evidence by citing examples of times their strengths helped them out. Finally, the 5th-graders created beautiful “strength fish,” expressing the qualities in which they take pride while connecting back to the central metaphor of their summer reading.

Our humanities project tied in nicely with math, where we have also been discussing the concept of proof – how do you know this is the answer? – and advisory, where students worked through the difference between equity and equality, acknowledging the uniqueness of each of us. During our camp trip students will continue to consider their own strengths and those of their peers, while testing themselves in an exciting new environment!
