Dietician and Bastyr adjunct faculty member, Shana Goldman, MS, RDN, will share her insights on navigating raising girls in a weight obsessed culture. What are the messages and influences girls absorb from media and social media, family and friends? What are the effects of parental body image, food practices and beliefs? What are the impacts of dieting and the correlation of dieting with disordered eating? How do we, as parents and caregivers, help develop and support a positive body image?
Shana will give you tools and information on health and movement at every size, basic concepts that enhance functional food beliefs and behaviors and tools to empower and ground girls in their strengths and self-worth, regardless of size. She will give you the language to have hard conversations about body image and she will discuss the importance of addressing body image for all genders, not just girls. Shana will teach you how to model helpful behaviors as adults and give ideas on how to build trust and gratitude for one’s body as a tool rather than ornament.
